It's that time of year again when local residents can rid their homes of any hazardous waste materials they may have.
Keegan Story, Superintendent of Solid Waste and Diversion with the city of Swift Current provides details on the program.
"We will be holding our spring household hazardous waste collection event on Tuesday, May 31st from 1:00 pm-7:00 pm at the Innovation Credit Union Iplex parking lot. We will be on the southeast portion of the lower level."
Story adds that accepted materials include anything that has a WHMIS symbol such as cleaners, solvents, aerosols, pesticides, paint, automotive materials, pharmaceuticals, and batteries.
Story explains why disposing of these materials properly is important.
"It's important to keep these materials out of our landfill and out of our environment so that they are handled appropriately due to the additional risks associated with these hazardous materials."
According to Story the intent of the program is for residential materials. He says that they receive funding from the province for materials some of these residential materials fees or deposits were collected on the back end in order to help cover the final cost of items. These deposits/program does not apply to commercial materials.
The site will be set up similar to previous years with a single entrance and single-file line for vehicles. Residents are asked to remain in their vehicles as staff will be on-site who are trained and ready to unload the materials.
For anyone unable to make this event, a fall event will be held at the same time and location on Wednesday, October 5th.
