General manager and vice president of the Edmonton Elite Football Club, Matthew Wilson, hopes to make the team's second season in Fort Saskatchewan a special one.
The Elite is looking to build off last year’s success after the team went undefeated through the season, losing only in the championship game to the Central Alberta Buccaneers. In addition to the on-field excitement, Wilson says they’re in the works to bring even more fun to the fan experience.
“We'll have a couple [Elks] tickets up for grabs, we have giveaways from some companies that partner with us or sponsorships. There’s going to be more experiences for the fans, and we have Ken’s Catering coming back doing the concession,” said Wilson.
Taurus Field became home to the Elite by chance last year after scheduling troubles forced them to look for new turf around the Edmonton region. Earlier this year, it was announced that Fort Saskatchewan would become the permanent home of the Elite.
Several players from across the Alberta Football League and even from the United States are on the roster this year. Wilson noted that players are calling from across Canada to participate in the league.
The team has also focused on working within the community, including partnerships with the Fort Saskatchewan Minor Football Association to continue growing the sport of football.
“Fort Saskatchewan welcomed us with open arms and that’s been great. We’re actually out there more this year practising Thursdays from 8-10 p.m. and all our home games are there, so it’s nice to have a home and it creates a whole different vibe.”
The team’s season opener will take place on the road Saturday (June 4) when they play Cold Lake. Their first home game is on June 11 at 5 p.m. where they will host the Fort McMurray Monarchs. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12-17, and children under 12 get in free.
