Two men were arrested after providing an ill-conceived alibi to police.

Around 8:30 a.m. on May 5, Redwater RCMP received a call about two men on bikes breaking into an abandoned home in town. They arrived to find the pair in the middle of breaking in, window in hand.

The men told police they had been hired to renovate another home in Redwater.

“The males advised that they needed replacement windows in order to complete the renovations and thought that it would be alright if they took the windows out of the abandoned residence to use,” RCMP wrote in a statement.

As a result, the 60- and 55-year-olds, both from Edmonton, are now facing criminal charges.

Police remind the public to conduct reference checks on contractors before having work done on their residences.
