Our local MLA is throwing her support behind a candidate in the UCP leadership race.

Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk has endorsed finance minister Travis Toews in the UCP leadership race.

Toews is one of six candidates so far to announce their bid for the top spot ever since Premier Jason Kenney announced his intention to resign following a leadership review in late May.

“Travis Toews is a man of integrity and a true conservative leader for our time,” wrote Armstrong-Homeniuk in a statement to MIX 107.

“He has raised a strong family, built a thriving cattle ranch and accounting business, and balanced Alberta’s budget. Travis Toews is also a consensus builder who can unite all sides of our party and lead us to victory in the next election.”

Armstrong-Homeniuk joins a list of 23 UCP MLAs endorsing Toews, including several ministers and some members who previously signed a letter urging Kenney to drop COVID-19 restrictions earlier.

Voting for the new leader of the United Conservative Party will begin on Sept. 2, and the new leader will be elected on Oct. 6.
