Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) held a grand opening last week for a new land-based learning centre in Sherwood Park.

According to EIPS, their purpose is two-fold. First, to offer a public space for students, staff and community members to come, connect and learn from the land. Second, to function as an ethical space to bring to life EIPS’ land acknowledgment and reaffirm treaty obligations.

“The board and administration believe education is key in our journey of reconciliation,” said Trina Boymook, the board chair of EIPS. “Because of that, we feel it’s our duty to educate ourselves and others; to facilitate opportunities to be in relation with the land; and our responsibility to listen and learn. By doing so, we can all move together toward healing and reconciliation.

The school division's Elder Wilson Bearhead will be available at this new site via QR code video to educate those who come to visit the space.

According to EIPS, the new space is one of 14 within the division -- classes at times are taught in the land-based learning centres.

Some of the schools that visit land-based learning centres in Fort Saskatchewan are Win Ferguson Elementary, SouthPointe School, Ecole Parc and Fort Saskatchewan Christian.

The grand opening took place at EIPS Central Services Office, 683 Wye Rd.
