A walk for diabetes research in Fort Saskatchewan doubled its fundraising goal.

On Sunday (Jun. 26), the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and Sun Life held a five kilometre walk at West River’s Edge.

The money raised from this annual event goes towards research and development into finding a cure for type 1 diabetes.

“We’ve been involved in the walk since our daughter was diagnosed in 2008,” said Ken Henitiuk, the co-chair for the Fort Saskatchewan JDRF walk.

According to Henitiuk, around 70 participants came out this year — it was free to join and everyone was welcome.

“We had an awesome day. The mayor was there and said a few words which was great. We had a good turn out considering that we haven’t had one in a couple of years due to COVID.”

As of right now, the fundraiser is at $15,055. The original goal was set at $7,500.

“We are so looking forward to next year. I can’t wait, I know it’s only been a couple of days since we had our walk but just looking forward to the next one again.”

Organizers are looking at June 25 as the potential date for 2023.

The fundraising is still open for this year's walk. If you wish to donate, you can do so here.
