Construction work and neighbourhood rehabilitation are underway throughout the city of Fort Saskatchewan.
Fort Centre Park Trail will remain closed until Oct. 1 as the new Highway 15 bridge nears completion. Once completed, the city says the project should improve drive times for local commuters and support economic development by enhancing the connection between Fort Saskatchewan, Sturgeon County, and the Industrial Heartland.
Since 2009, traffic volumes on the Highway 15 bridge have increased by 50 per cent and continue to grow.
On 94 Street, preparation work is underway to widen the road from two to four lanes. Storm infrastructure and subgrade work have been completed for the sidewalk, and a contractor is on-site to begin construction.
The Jubilee Recreation Centre (JRC) is also undergoing some changes. A contractor has been selected to replace the JRC's ice plant, which is nearing its end of life. The new ice plant and cooling system are on-site, concrete work for the new cooling system is complete, and a fence has been installed around the concrete pad.
Southfort Meadows will soon have a new amenity. A new park will be opened along Greenfield Link just south of Meadowview Drive. It will include a lit hard-surface boarded rink, support building, parking lot, skating area and a plaza. Design work is complete, and a contractor has been selected, with construction expected to begin this month.
This fall, the new Transfer and Eco Station will open. The city will be able to accept more hazardous waste and recyclable materials thanks to the latest improvements. In addition to providing sufficient space and material separation, the renovations will allow Fort Saskatchewan to participate in future diversion, revenue-generation, and charity-driven initiatives. The transfer station remains open during construction.
Neighbourhood Rehabilitation Projects
As part of the city’s annual program to ensure community infrastructure meets necessary standards, several projects will occur this summer in the following areas:
101 Street
- Landscape work is underway.
103 Street
- Work includes replacing water, sewer, and road infrastructure on 103 St from 99 Ave to 98 Avenue.
- Work is underway to remove and replace water and sewer infrastructure.
- The sanitary sewer work is complete. A contractor is working on replacing water and storm infrastructure.
- Concrete removals have started.
- 103 Street from 99 Avenue to 98 Avenue will be closed during construction. Access to the bottle depot is being provided from 99 Ave. Residents can park in the old Husky gas station.
104 Street
- Work includes replacing water, sewer and road infrastructure on 104 St from 99 Ave to 100 Avenue.
- A consultant has been selected, and design work is complete
- The tender for a contractor has closed. Tenders are being evaluated.
- Work is scheduled to occur this year.
108 Street
- The project will replace water, sewer and road infrastructure on 108 Street from 101 Ave to the end of 108 Street.
- Work on 108 Street from 101 Ave to 102 Ave is complete, and the road is open. Landscaping will occur in the summer of 2022.
- Replacement of the sanitary, water and storm infrastructure is complete. Testing for the water main will take place this week.
- Backfilling and subgrade work on the road will begin this week.
- 108 Street north of 102 Ave will be closed during construction.
Lowe Ave
- Work includes replacing water, sewer and road infrastructure on Lowe Avenue from Elizabeth Drive to Jubilee Drive.
- The tender has closed, and a contractor has been selected.
- Temporary water for affected residents is installed.
- Work on the water main has started.
- Excavation work to replace water, sewer and storm infrastructure will start this week.
