While school zones are no longer in effect, playground zones are extra busy this time of year.
Playground zones are in effect year-round and every day, from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset. This means that the time a playground zone ends is relative to the time of year. Since sunset happens earlier in the winter, the playground zone times will end earlier than in the warmer seasons.
School zones have set times, in Fort Saskatchewan, it's 8 to 4:30 p.m. when classes are in.
You can tell the difference between a playground zone from a school zone from the sign -- an orange diamond showing a stick figure running after a ball indicates a playground zone, whereas a yellow pentagon featuring two people walking is a school zone.
Municipal enforcement supervisor Lee Hardman says that sometimes there can be both a school zone and a playground zone, but none of these exist in Fort Saskatchewan.
"If there's a playground, it would still need to be signed out as that, if that's the case. You wouldn't consider a school zone a playground zone unless it's signed by both. It is a possibility, but the playground signage would have to be present as well."
Like school zones, playground zone speeds are 30 km/h.
Hardman added you can expect to find a playground zone sign anywhere that there's a playground unless there's already a school zone sign present.
