The minor football season in Fort Saskatchewan is just about ready for kickoff.

According to Chris Malo, coaching director for Fort Saskatchewan Football, the Fort Falcons have seen record registration ahead of the start of the season next week. Practice begins on Aug. 2, followed by a fundraising event on Aug. 6 in partnership with the Edmonton Huskies.

The bantam team, which typically sees close to 30 registrations, is nearing 40 signups this season.

“We’re sitting at almost 110 total players for our organization right now, all the way from novice to bantam,” Malo said. “It’s exciting times.”

Also, Malo noted the bantam team is moving up to Tier 1 for the first time. He believes COVID-19 brought people together in ways not seen before the pandemic, which has helped to drive the surge of interest in local football.

“There’s been a lot of hard work over the last number of years by a lot of people to put us into a position of success.”

He added the Falcons are looking forward to this year after a dream season that saw the peewee and bantam teams both take the provincial title in addition to finishing undefeated. Malo always encourages the community to take in a Falcons game.

Fundraiser

The Aug. 6 fundraiser is $10 to attend, with proceeds going directly back to the Fort Saskatchewan Falcons. Spectators at Taurus Field will get the chance to see the Huskies, one of six teams in the Canadian Junior Football League, battle it out for a spot on the team’s final roster.

The fundraiser will kick off at noon at Taurus Field. Tickets cost $10.
