The region is currently under a heat warning.

Environment Canada issued the warning early Wednesday morning (July 27) as daytime temperatures are expected to reach highs ranging from 29 C to the mid 30’s Thursday.

The heat warning is in effect for Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton, St. Albert, and the western portion of Sturgeon County, including Morinville, Legal, Rivière Qui Barre and Villeneuve.

Those in affected areas should consider taking extra precautions, including:

  • Consider rescheduling outdoor activities to cooler hours of the day.
  • Take frequent breaks from the heat, spending time in cooled indoor spaces where possible.
  • Drink plenty of water and other non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated beverages to stay hydrated.
  • Check for your children or pets before you exit your vehicle. Do not leave any person or pet inside a closed vehicle for any length of time.

A heat warning is issued when high temperatures may cause heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion can include high body temperature, lack of sweat, confusion, fainting, and unconsciousness.

Be sure to check on those prone to heat-related conditions, such as infants, children, seniors, those with preexisting lung, heart, kidney, nervous system, mental health, or diabetes conditions, outdoor workers, and those who live alone.
