Construction is set to begin soon on the Southfort Meadows Park Amenity project.

The park will feature a new hard surface outdoor boarded rink facility that can be used year-round. This will be the first outdoor boarded rink in the neighbourhood. To accompany the rink, washrooms, a skate change area, and a paved parking lot will be added.

Brenex Construction will mobilise the site to begin building in about two weeks.

"They are waiting right now for utility locates and a little bit of geotechnical work to be done," said Grant Schaffer, the City's director of Fleet Facilities and Engineering.

The idea for the amenity has been around since 2015 for the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

"It has just been waiting for development to occur around it so that the infrastructure to support the facility would be there."

Schaffer added that lines and nets will also be added to the surface for activities like basketball and lacrosse in the warmer months.

This upcoming winter is the estimated timeline to have the rink operational.

The budget for the Southfort Meadows Park Amenity project is approximately $2-million. It will be built at 80 Greenfield Link.
