The province hopes to make Alberta Day festivites a reality.
From Sept. 1-3, several free events will take place across Alberta to honour the inaugural day, and the provincial government is offering funding to municipalities to host their own Alberta Day celebrations. The new holiday was created in July by the Alberta government to celebrate Alberta's creation on Sept. 1.
"Alberta Day is a new annual tradition for this province, and a chance to celebrate who we are, take stock of where we came from and show pride in what we've achieved together," said Premier Jason Kenney.
The legislature in Edmonton will host concerts featuring local talent, and a made-in-Alberta marketplace will give people a chance to try and buy locally grown and made products. Kid-friendly entertainment, cultural workshops, and hands-on activities will also be available during the event.
Funding is available for municipalities to host Alberta Day events for their communities:
- Municipalities with populations greater than 10,000 are eligible for up to $10,000.
- Municipalities with populations between 1,000 and 10,000 are eligible for up to $5,000.
- Municipalities with populations less than 1,000 are eligible for $1,500.
If you are unable to attend an event, the province still encourages people to celebrate Alberta's history by visiting a provincial historic site, park, or museum.
