Police and municipal enforcement are conducting a back-to-school drive.

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP and Municipal Enforcement Services building will have a donation bin available for people wanting to donate school supplies from now until Aug. 15.

After that, there will be a main donation drive outside Staples' Fort Saskatchewan location (9410 86 Avenue) on Aug. 15 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with RCMP members collecting school supplies.

Following a conversation with local teachers, community peace officer Dillian Carnegie suggested a school supply drive after learning teachers spend their own money on supplies to ensure all students are well prepared for school.

"As a school resource officer, I have seen first-hand the amount of investments made by teachers to ensure a positive learning environment for their students.  As a mother of two, I can also appreciate the costs associated with equipping our children with the proper resources to learn," said RCMP Constable Lauren Mowbray.

"By hosting a school supply drive, we are hoping it will bring some fun and excitement and allow students to choose from an assortment of supplies."

Police hope to fill a police cruiser with as many school supplies as possible.

The first day of classes is Aug. 30 for the Elk Island Public and Catholic School divisions and Aug. 31 for the Sturgeon Public School Division.
