On Friday (Aug. 5), the Sherwood Park Rotary Club named Charlie Teeuwsen 'Rotarian of the Year.'

Raised in Strathcona County, Teeuwsen first joined a Rotary Club in Grand Prairie in the late 1980s.

"I first joined Rotary in Grand Prairie as a way to get involved in the community," explained Teeuwsen.

After moving back to the local area, he joined the Sherwood Park Rotary club in 2000.

"We get involved with a number of projects that involve supporting various areas in the community."

The Sherwood Park Rotary Club holds meetings every Friday morning, and that is where Teeuwsen discovered he was receiving the title of Rotarian of the year.

"It's actually quite an honour since we have many members that take on leadership roles and are very active in the club, so I was somewhat surprised by the honour but very pleased as well."

Teeuwsen explained that being a part of the Rotary Club has been his main hobby since he retired from ATCO Gas in 2011.

"One thing I really do enjoy is the fellowship with the members."

In addition to Rotary work, Teeuwsen has been involved with the Aerobatic Club of Alberta, Aerobatics Canada and helping out at Sherwood Park Alliance Church.

Teeuwsen added that he enjoys being a part of the club and has no plans to stop any time soon.

An upcoming project the Sherwood Park Rotary Club has planned is a meal packaging event. On Sept. 17, the club hopes to pack 60,000 meals for the local community and surrounding areas in need at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
