One person has died, and another is critically wounded following an incident northeast of Redwater on Monday (Aug. 8).

Just before 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, St. Paul RCMP responded to a call of a possible attempted abduction in Saddle Lake Cree Nation. Upon police arrival, an “interaction” occurred, and the two suspects, a male and female, took off in a red pickup truck.

RCMP say the two had been suspects in several ongoing police investigations.

A short while later, police located the pair in the Smoky Lake area, approximately 40 kilometres northeast of Redwater. A confrontation between police and the suspects resulted in police firing their guns at the pair.

One suspect was killed while the other was taken to hospital in critical condition. No RCMP members were injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken over investigating the circumstances of the officer-involved shooting.

The original investigation is still ongoing by the St. Paul RCMP.
