More details have been released regarding Fort Saskatchewan's newest affordable housing complex.
The Muriel Ross Abdurahman Court is getting close to completion and is still aiming for an early 2023 opening. This is the first affordable housing complex for families and individuals in Fort Saskatchewan, and it was constructed by the Heartland Housing Foundation.
Named after Fort Saskatchewan's first female mayor, the Muriel Ross Court features 83 units ranging from studio to three bedrooms in size, priced at 20-25 per cent below the regular market rates for the region.
The building is also unique because it utilizes shipping containers on the ground floor and is a net-zero building. Approximately 20 units within the building will be purpose-built to serve the needs of adults living with disabilities in partnership with the Robin Hood Association.
It is expected that the application process will begin in late September.
Eligibility for housing at Muriel Ross Court is based on an income threshold which will be verified at the time of application. An applicant's total income household must be under these amounts:
- Studio: $36,000/yr.
- 1-Bedroom: $42,000/yr.
- 2-Bedroom: $52,500/yr.
- 3-Bedroom: $62,500/yr.
Applications will be reviewed on a first come-first served basis and will not be priority scored. Aside from the income requirements, any applicant or household member who appears on Alberta's dangerous offender registry is disqualified from housing with Heartland Housing Foundation.
Here is how much the units will cost:
- Studio (318 square feet): $635
- One bedroom (641 square feet) $900
- Two bedroom (965 square feet) $940
- Three bedroom (1294 square feet) $995
Monthly rent includes heat and water, but other utilities and amenities will be the tenant's responsibility.
