The Town of Cochrane has announced construction will be beginning on a new paved pathway that will connect existing town trails to the community of Sunset Ridge.

The temporary road located behind the Sunset View portion of Cochrane's northernmost community will be paved over, restoring the pre-existing greenspace and replacing an existing informal pathway. Established by Melcor Developments Ltd, for construction access in early 2022, the site's original restoration plan included returning the area to its original natural state.

Now, supported by residents of Sunset Ridge, Cochrane administration and Melcor will work together, creating a critical link in Cochrane's pathway system by going forward with the building of an enduring paved pathway into its site rehabilitation plan.

"We are fortunate as a community to work with developers that understand and align with council and administration's priorities," says Drew Hyndman, town executive director of development and Infrastructure services. "We are committed to community connectivity, enhancing open space and natural areas, and furthering the livability of Cochrane... This partnership demonstrates how Cochrane is creating efficiencies strategically by evaluating future community needs and current opportunities."

“Melcor is very pleased to partner with the Town and collaborate in building lasting amenities for residents in Sunset Ridge,” says Alan Boucher, Melcor Developments Ltd. regional manager. “This paved pathway extension is one example of how a partnership between municipalities and developers can create opportunities to optimize resources and work collaboratively to benefit both the town and residents. Thank you to administration and council for your support in bringing forward these types of partnerships.”

Melcor will contribute $285,000 towards the project. For safety purposes, the area will be closed to the public until the paved pathway is completed.

Construction will last approximately six to eight weeks, weather permitting. The new paved pathway is expected to open for use in Fall 2022.
