With school getting underway, the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank is in need of some items.

The three busiest times of the year for the food bank are Christmas, a new year, and the start of school.

Kassandra Gartner, executive director for the food bank, says items that the food bank needs the most are healthy cereal, jam, rice, pasta, crackers and cookies.

"We serve a lot of families. 44 per cent of who we serve are youth, so we're always looking for school snacks. The nut-free granola bars, the fruit cups, the pudding cups," Gartner said.

Other items that are helpful for the start of the school year are things like toilet paper, toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash and shampoo. Items like cleaning supplies and garbage bags are also greatly appreciated.

For those who either don't have items to donate, the food bank accepts money donations which they use towards purchasing more supplies.

"We are always thankful for our community, we're very appreciative of folks that keep us in mind when they're doing their grocery shopping, and we're very thankful for those who support the food bank."

Gartner says that they are accepting volunteers who are looking to help feed the less fortunate.

The food bank is open for donations on weekdays between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
