Looking for something to do this long weekend? We’ve got you covered, and best of all, it’s all free.

As we chase the final days of summer, here are four free things to do in and around the heartland this Labour Day long weekend:

Bruderheim Family Fall Festival

On Saturday (Sept. 3), the Town of Bruderheim will host a flurry of activity as the community marks the start of a new season. The slo-pitch event will kick off the day at 9 a.m., while the scooter/skateboard competition will begin at 10 a.m. The scooter tournament is an event that Vincent Alyward, a teenager from Lamont, started last year.

Bring a lawn chair and take in music with Harold Reichstein, an RCMP dog handling and duck herding demonstration. Also at the festival will be RCMP, military, and fire department vehicles for viewing, a petting zoo, and bugs and reptiles.

The day will wrap up with the Jarrid Lee Band and fireworks at dusk.

Sheep Leaving Parade

It’s that time of year again! Fort Saskatchewan will wave goodbye to its fuzzy, friendly flock of lawnmowers at the Sheep Leaving Parade on Monday (Sept. 5). The parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. From noon until 1 p.m., feed the sheep apples and carrots post-parade at the Fort Heritage Precinct.

Spray parks open for one last time this weekend

With the forecast calling for highs in the low 30s, this weekend will be perfect for hitting the Kin Family Spray Park for the season's final weekend. The spray park is free and is open from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Alberta Day celebrations

The City of Fort Saskatchewan will be hosting its first-ever Alberta Day celebration. On Saturday, enjoy free admission to Fort Saskatchewan city facilities.

An event will take place from 4-7 p.m. at the Fort Heritage Precinct. The event will kick off with a performance by Phyllis Sinclair. Also at the celebration will be free hot dogs, Indigenous learning opportunities and “Fort Saskatchewan Trivia”.

The Strathcona Vintage Tractor Association will host a tractor show behind the North Central Co-op food store from 4-7 p.m.
