The Strathmore High School Spartans Football Team (2-3) earned a 22-13 win over the Bert Church High School Chargers last Saturday! The win broke a three-game losing streak.
Head Coach Danny Warrack was happy to see a balanced effort from the team and improvement all around that lead to this win.
"Our defense, they've improved every week. Our offense is finally starting to show some signs of improvement. If we keep it going, I think we're going to be a tough out for anyone," he said.
There's no doubt the defense help up their side of the bargain, but the big story of this game is the offense. Warrack said the offense really needed to step things up, and this week he finally saw a big step in the right direction. A key aspect of this was a change at quarterback, as former backup Dylan Elliott started. Warrack said he had a great game for his first high school start with a 167 yard, 2 TD and 2 int performance. As for former starter Brady Johansen, he made an impact all over the field.
"I had Brady Johansen playing receiver. And then also in like a Wildcat package at quarterback where he'd run the ball. Definitely gave our run game some lights and he ended up with 137 yards rushing, 1 touchdown, and he caught a few passes for another touchdown."
The return of receiver Aidan Harker from injury also gave a much needed boost to the offense, as he hauled in a touchdown as well.
While Warrack is happy with the offense's performance and the win, he still says there is still work to be done.
"We did have some costly turnovers that kind of allowed for Bert Church to get back into the game. That we have to clean up. We had 3 bad fumbles and then we had a couple dropped passes, 1 resulted in an interception after it bounced off our guy and into their guys."
The Spartans will try to keep their momentum going next Friday against the rival Drumheller Titans at 4 PM on Friday on home field. Go cheer them on to help them take down the Titans and create a win streak!
