A suspect linked to Monday (Oct. 10) morning's gunfight near Ardrossan is dead after another incident with police.

At around 3 a.m., a Strathcona County RCMP officer located a stolen white BMW while conducting patrols on Highway 16 and Highway 824.

According to police, an occupant was told to get out of the car, when they pulled out a gun and shot at the officer.

A brief firefight broke out between the officer and the armed occupant before the shooter fled with the stolen car.

Later, at about 5:30 p.m., police received reports that a white BMW was spotted driving erratically on Highway 21 near New Sarepta.

Strathcona County RCMP arrived on the scene to discover the vehicle in the ditch with two civilians helping the lone male suspect in the BMW.

After approaching the vehicle, an altercation between police and the suspect broke out that prompted officers to fire shots. The suspect was shot and, despite medical assistance from officers, died as a result of his injuries.

RCMP found a gun at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has taken control of the investigation.
