The Saskatchewan Health Authority is putting the call out for volunteers to support its efforts on a variety of health care fronts. The Authority is seeking volunteers  to assist staff, patients, clients, families and visitors in its acute care facilities, long term care homes and community programs. Options include pet support programs, assisting patients navigating through acute care settings, and supporting Meals on Wheels programs.

“Prior to the pandemic, the SHA had a strong volunteer base,” said Bernie Doepker, SHA’s director of Volunteer Services. “As with every sector, we are in the rebuilding phase for our volunteer team. We are asking people to consider volunteering with one of our programs across the SHA as we work together to improve health and well-being. Every day. For everyone.”

Volunteers have the options of shifts that work for them ranging from two to four hours, usually a few times a month. Interested volunteers are encouraged to match available volunteer positions to their skills, interests, experiences, and availability.

The act of giving time has benefits for the volunteer as well, notes the SHA release. Volunteering has shown to contribute to better mental and physical health; it reduces stress and provides fulfilment and a sense of purpose. Volunteering also offers critical support to people in need and connects the volunteers to the community they serve.

“Volunteering with the SHA is one of the highlights of my week. I love to be of service and it makes me happy to help others,” said Margaret Scott, Regina Pasqua Hospital Gift Shop Volunteer.
