The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating two officer-involved shootings in the area.

The first shooting was just after 3 a.m. on Oct. 10. A Strathcona County RCMP officer was conducting patrols on Highway 16 near Ardrossan when the officer noticed a white BMW SUV with a stolen license plate.

Inside the vehicle was two people -- a man driving, and a female sitting in the passenger seat. When the officer ordered them to leave the vehicle, one of the occupants shot at the officer.

Gunfire was exchanged but the couple got away. The officer was not injured.

At 5 p.m. that same day, the RCMP received a report of a white BMW SUV swerving on Highway 21 near New Sarepta. Officers located the SUV in a ditch where two men and one woman were on the scene.

When officers approached one of the men, an incident occurred that resulted in two officers shooting the man. Emergency medical services were called, but the man was declared dead at the scene.

Officers also found a gun at the scene.

ASIRT has begun its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the officer's use of force, and whether the two incidents are related.

ASIRT is asking anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed the shootings to contact investigators at 780-644-1483.
