Local ghost hunters and paranormal enthusiasts might want to check out their TV guides on Wednesday (Nov. 9) night.
The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) will be broadcasting two episodes of 'The Other Side' in the coming weeks that take place in Fort Saskatchewan.
The documentary series features a team of three indigenous ghost hunters, Jeff Richards, Erin Goodpipe, and Lee Crowchild, who tour the country searching for unsettled spirits.
Unlike traditional ghost-hunting shows, this one comes from an indigenous perspective and utilizes various traditions and wisdom from the culture.
The first episode will air on Wednesday (Nov. 9) night at 5:30 p.m. and will feature the team exploring the Fort Heritage Precinct on the lookout for spirits.
Precinct curator, Kyle Bjornson, will make an appearance in the episode.
"It will take place in our reproduction North-West Mounted Police Fort," said Bjornson. "The first execution that took place [in Fort Saskatchewan] was back in 1878 and it was a Cree man named Swift Runner who was hanged for the murder of family members."
"It was the first legal execution to take place in the Northwest Territories, in what became the province of Alberta."
The North-West Mounted Police conducted five more executions here up until 1915. After the jail opened on the same site in 1915, another 29 executions took place.
"There is a lot of kind of dark history here in terms of the jail itself and people being here for various crimes and reasons," said Bjornson. "If you're looking at it from a spiritual perspective there might be some spirits that are in anguish."
While Bjornson has never experienced anything paranormal in the precinct, he says there have been reports before.
"We've had past employees who have kind of thought they've sensed spectral presences."
