Strathcona County Emergency Services have provided an update on last Friday's (Nov. 25) house fire in Sherwood Park.

Firefighters were called to a single-family home in the Meadowview area at around 3:30 that afternoon. They responded with two firetrucks, a tower truck, an on-duty platoon chief, and support personnel.

Devin Capcara, the deputy chief for Strathcona County Emergency Services, describes how they responded.

"When we got there, we found the fire was well advanced, so we began defensive operation fighting the fire from the outside," said Capcara. "There was a significant amount of damage done to the home."

"The neighbouring houses were threatened but we were able to keep the fire from spreading to the houses next door."

After an investigation, it was determined that the cause of the blaze was the ignition of flammable gas. There were renovations going on inside the home, but it hasn't been determined what kind of gas caused the fire.

The family who lived in the house was not home at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported.
