The government of Alberta has announced that they plan on suspending the provincial fuel tax.

The suspension will come into effect on January 1 and will last for six months.

Alberta's Minister of Finance, Travis Toews, issued a statement on the manner on Tuesday (Dec. 20) afternoon.

"This means that Albertans will save 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel from January to June," said Toews. "These are meaningful savings that will have a real impact on Albertans’ finances."

Some of the expected relief that Albertans who re-fuel their vehicles once a week can expect is about $440 in savings for pickup truck drivers and anywhere between $160 to just over $300 for car and SUV drivers.

“Reducing the cost of fuel benefits all Alberta drivers. It becomes more affordable to transport goods and products," said Toews.

On July 1, the province will revert to the regular system of providing fuel tax relief, which is based on the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil.

The province says that they have provided $850 million in savings since they implemented the fuel tax relief program back in April.

Here are some of the best fuel prices in the region right now (Dec. 20):

  • Fort Saskatchewan: $1.22/per litre
  • Sherwood Park: $1.06/per litre
  • Edmonton: $1.05/per litre
