At 10:35 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, Airdrie RCMP responded to a multi-vehicle collision, on Highway 2 north of Veterans Boulevard at Highway 72 in Rocky View County (Highway 2 Northbound at Range Road 293). On Wednesday, December 28, the RCMP confirmed one fatality.

First responders are assisting over a dozen vehicles involved in this event. Vehicle fires and injuries are reported.

According to Constable Patrick Lambert of the RCMP, upwards of 20 vehicles are involved in the collision, with multiple vehicles on fire.

"Due to intense fog conditions and a lack of traction on the road; travel is not recommended through this area at this time. There are detours being set up for northbound travel on highway 567 as well as southbound travel to break up the traffic congestion along Highway 72 or Highway 806," Constable Lambert said.

"RCMP as well as EMS and fire personnel [from various area departments] are presently responding and navigating the weather conditions. We would ask that motorists that don't need to be on the roadways at this time, please don't be."

Travel along Highway 2 in the northbound lanes is closed at Veterans Boulevard and motorists can expect delays for the next several hours. Traffic is being diverted north through Highway 567. Travel along Highway 2 in the southbound lanes flowing very slowly, with diversions being made to Highway 72 and Highway 806.

Constable Lambert advised that anyone on the QEII, either travelling southbound or northbound will have to be prepared for major road congestion and delays.

"If the opportunity presents itself to exit and seek an overnight stay in a hotel or accommodations nearby, do that for a few hours until the weather pattern changes."

RCMP, EMS, and various fire departments are currently on the scene at it is anticipated that they will be there for some time. A collision reconstructionist team is also en route.

RCMP is asking that motorists not travel in these areas at this time. Intense fog, icy road conditions and changing weather patterns are dramatically impacting the ability of motorists to see and allow for first responders to attend to those who require assistance.

RCMP is warning the public of poor road conditions along Highway 2 south of Red Deer and north of Airdrie. Roads are snow-covered and icy, and visibility is poor due to blowing snow and fog. RCMP recommends drivers avoid travel if possible. If travel is necessary motorists are asked to slow down and adjust their driving to road conditions.
