According to numerous reports, Dickson Stevenson Trail between Airdrie and Crossfield is heavily congested. While police are on the scene, trying to help traffic flow, motorists can expect major delays as travellers are trying to find other routes to avoid the highway closure on the QEII.

According to the RCMP, due to the massive multi-vehicle collision which occurred late Tuesday evening approximately 2 kilometres north of Veterans Boulevard along Highway 2 at Highway 72, Northbound QEII at the junction of Highway 72, near Crossfield will remain closed for several more hours on Wednesday. A detour has been set up using Highway 567 (Veterans Boulevard) in Airdrie.

One person was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision last night, while nine others were transported to the hospital. A motorist who happened upon the collision last night documented the scene.

According to police, preliminary information has determined that a commercial vehicle including a trailer, along with five sedan cars, four pickup trucks, three SUV’s and a passenger van were involved in this incident.

"Details of the cause of the collision remain under investigation, with primary factors appearing to be weather and road conditions," a police press release stated.

RCMP continues to warn the public of poor road conditions along Highway 2 south of Red Deer and north of Airdrie. Roads are snow-covered and icy, and visibility is poor due to blowing snow and fog. RCMP recommends drivers avoid travel if possible. If travel is necessary motorists are asked to slow down and adjust their driving to road conditions.
