It was a busy year for sports in the region.
From some local NHL players being traded to Olympic champions, here are the top five sports stories from 2022.
#5 - Emerence Maschmayer brings home the gold
Bruderheim's own Emerence Maschmayer made her country proud by bringing home the gold as part of the Canadian women's national hockey team at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.
She was perfect in the two games she appeared in, taking home wins against Russia and Sweden while only allowing one goal.
Bruderheim renamed 51 ave 'Emerence Way' to commemorate her accomplishment.
#4 - Homecoming for NHL stars
A few local NHL players returned home back in June for a sold out Fort Sask Rangers alumni game.
Montreal Canadiens forward Kirby Dach and Anaheim Ducks top prospect Olen Zellweger donned the Rangers jersey once again to help raise funds for the Rangers Athletic Club (RAC).
#3 - Controversy hits Fort Sask Rangers
The U18 AAA Fort Saskatchewan Rangers ran into a bit of controversy in the AEHL finals against the Calgary Buffaloes last March.
In Game Two, the two teams played to a 2-2 tie that required overtime in which a Calgary shot that hit the post was incorrectly called a goal by the referee, giving the Buffaloes the win despite not scoring.
The Buffaloes went on to win the championship.
#2 - Local Golfer hits shot of his life
Local golfer Jake Letourneau hit the shot of his life at the Fort Sask Golf and Curling Club back in August.
He scored his first ever hole-in-one in his 26-year career at the Mixed Open Championships.
“My heart is starting to go…I got really excited and was pretty happy," said Letourneau.
Letourneau joined his brother as others in the family to hit a hole-in-one.
#1 - Local NHL players traded
A few local NHL players were involved in some high-profile trades in 2022.
Kirby Dach was moved to from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Montreal Canadiens in a draft-day deal. The Blackhawks also sent Brandon Hagel to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the trade deadline.
It's worked out for Dach, who is well on his way to a career high in points in his first with the Canadiens, while Hagel has looked good with the Lightning.
