A historical site near Bon Accord was destroyed in an early-morning fire last Friday (Dec. 30).

Fedorah Hall, which has stood in the area for just under a century, was completely destroyed in the fire.

Sturgeon County Mayor, Alanna Hnatiw, offered words of support to those affected by the building's destruction.

"While we are thankful no people were injured, we acknowledge that the community is experiencing a great loss," said Hnatiw. "[Fedorah Hall] represented our strong community connections and was part of the history and identity of the area."

The hall was a popular place to host celebrations and was up kept by the Fedorah Ivan Frank Education Society.

Their hard work in keeping the building in working condition is not lost on the mayor.

"We appreciate your efforts to maintain the property and provide a place to support Ukrainian culture, history, and heritage in the region," said Hnatiw. "The work you do is valued by many in our community."

Multiple emergency crews responded to the fire and, although they weren't able to save the building, their work on controlling the blaze was also appreciated.

"We are proud of your work and grateful for your efforts," said Hnatiw.

There has been no word on the cause of the fire.

The hall was built in 1935 and was named after Ivan Franko, a Ukrainian poet and political leader.
