1937 ~ 2023 (age 85)
Darlene Laura Fischer (nee Leonard) was born March 28, 1937 at home in the RM of Grasslake along with her twin sister, Marlene, to proud parents, Margaret and Clifford Leonard. They were later united with another sister and the final piece of their family, Peggy.
Darlene and her sisters grew up on the family farm until she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Fischer, at the tender age of 17. She enjoyed going to dances and her first-of-many hockey games with Bill by her side. They married on September 7, 1955 surrounded by friends and family in Luseland, Saskatchewan where they would eventually reside on the Fischer homestead. Soon after the newlywed bliss, they welcomed their daughter, Donna-Lynn, and eventually, younger brothers, Jerry and Dwayne.
Darlene worked hard throughout her life, both as a homemaker/farmer’s wife and the morning cook at the Royal George café for numerous years. She enjoyed music and dancing, gardening, shopping, watching her grandchildren’s hockey games, and picnics at Hearts Hill when the kids were younger. She was a fantastic cook and baker, and no meal was complete without one of her famous pies. The boys would often tease her saying she would never make another pie as good as the one she had served; the next day there would be twice as many freshly baked pies ready for the challenge. She tolerated teasing throughout her life, both by Bill and his wild antics, and the grandchildren and their friends who frequented her home on the farm. She welcomed every visitor with open arms and, between her and Bill, nobody ever left with an empty stomach.
Her family was her heart and soul, which made the losses Darlene experienced throughout the years that much harder to bear. Bill and Darlene functioned as the perfect pair out on the farm until Bill’s passing in December, 2020. Without Bill by her side, Darlene eventually required additional care and spent her final days in the Kerrobert Health Centre Long Term Care where she was cared for by the most devoted, loving staff.
Darlene leaves to mourn her sons, Jerry and Dwayne, sisters, Marlene (Melvin) and Peggy (Clinton), grandchildren Regan, Matthew (Melissa), Scot (Dawna), Jared, Joel (Tesa), Justin (Janelle), Rayleen (Mick), Brenden (Jessica), and Devon, and great-grandchildren Arden, Jaxtyn, Barrett, and Leo. She was predeceased by her daughter, Donna, daughter-in-law, Laurilee, and husband, Bill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Darlene’s memory to the Kerrobert Health Centre Long Term Care or the Luseland Discovery Daycare.
