It was a very busy weekend for minor hockey teams around the region.
Teams from Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Strathcona County, and Sturgeon were all busy playing at the Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week 2023 tournament. In all, an incredible 53 divisions were played at the tourney, ranging from U11 to U18 teams.
Local teams found a lot of success at the end of it, here's a look at all the weekend winners!
Fort Saskatchewan:
Fort Saskatchewan saw four teams take home medals over the weekend.
The U15 tier three Rangers defeated Sherwood Park in a tight 5-4 game to bring home the gold. The U18 tier two Rangers followed suit, also beating Sherwood Park in their final by a score of 4-2.
The Fort Fury women's teams also had a great showing.
The U11 Fury battled hard in a final game against Leduc but came up just short in a 4-3 final to take home silver. The U18 Fury also dropped a razor-thin 1-0 game against Edmonton for a silver medal.
Sherwood Park:
A weekend to remember for Sherwood Park minor hockey as they had 11 teams take part in gold medal games.
At the U11 level, their tier two and tier three teams were victorious, winning their games by a score of 4-3 and 5-1 respectively.
The U13s had some mixed results. The tier two team beat out Stony Plain by a score of 2-1 while the tier five team beat NEZ Edmonton 4-1 to win gold as well. The tier six team gave it their best effort but dropped the final game to KC North for a silver medal finish.
Some trouble at the U15 level, but good results nonetheless, as the tier two and three teams took home silver medals. The U15 girls, on the other hand, were able to secure gold with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against Edmonton.
The U18 teams were also quite successful. The tier two team squeaked out a 4-3 OT win against Spruce Grove to secure gold while tier one team dispatched the SWZ Oil kings 6-1 for a gold of their own. The tier two team came up short against Fort Saskatchewan to take home silver.
Strathcona County:
Strathcona County had three teams in the championships.
The U11 tier one team got around North Seera by a score of 2-1 to win gold while their other tier one team came up just short in a 3-2 loss against Beaumont to take silver.
The Strathcona U15 tier one team was also victorious, beating St. Albert by a score of 3-2 to win gold.
Sturgeon:
Lastly, Sturgeon had five teams play in the finals.
The lone U11 team took home silver.
The same can be said for their U13 and U18 teams. The lone gold went to their U15 girl's team who beat Edmonton by a score of 5-0.
