Two rival junior basketball teams joined together to support an injured player.

During Elk Island Public School's (EIPS) Junior Basketball Tournament, hosted at Fort Christian over the weekend, JP II and Fort Christian were playing against each other in the gold medal game when a player fell to the court with an apparent injury.

Albert Stajuana, a player on JP II team, had seriously hurt his knee.

Albert was sent to the Stollery Children's Hospital where doctors performed knee surgery before putting his leg in a brace.

Once players on both teams realized the extent of Albert's injury, they decided to put aside their differences to support him.

The teams lead a prayer for Albert before presenting him with two signed basketballs, a goodie basket filled with his favourite snacks, and a card.

"You're an amazing player and we are praying for a quick recovery," The card read. "We know you will come back stronger than ever."

Arlyn, Albert's mom, said that it was heartwarming to see the effort the teams put in to cheer up her son.

"It was a good moment for me to see that my son at that time was so happy," Arlyn said. "When he opened the gifts, I saw the spark in my son's eyes."

"Despite what happened to him, he had the support of the teams."

Though Albert is expected to miss the rest of the season, there is no shortage of people who can't wait to see him recover and get back to playing the sport he loves.
