Upwards of 30 vehicles were involved in a massive collision that occurred before noon on Friday.

Police said the incident occurred northbound on the QEII at the junction with Highway 581, east of Carstairs.

"One driver was transported by ground ambulance with unknown injuries," an RCMP release stated.

EMS confirmed to Discover Airdrie that the individual was a woman in her 80s, who sustained serious injuries. She was transported to a Calgary hospital.

According to the RCMP, two southbound lanes and one northbound lane are now open on Highway 2 at Highway 581. Motorists are asked to exercise extreme caution as weather conditions are hazardous. Police believe that emergency personnel will be on the scene for another hour.

Highway conditions on the QEII near Calgary's city limits remain icy and partly covered in snow. Conditions North of Airdrie are icy, with poor visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.

Earlier in the day, after a three-car collision in Calgary, police issued a warning to motorists, asking that if travel is not necessary, they should stay off the roads. The collision on Northbound Stoney Trail has since been cleared up.
