A Fort Saskatchewan boy will be wearing the 'C' for the Edmonton Oil Kings.
The club announced last week that former Ranger Rhett Melnyk will become the 15th captain in franchise history.
"I was at a loss for words," Melnyk described the moment he found out. "It's a huge honour to be named the captain of such a prestigious organization."
The announcement was extra special for Melnyk, as it fulfilled a childhood dream.
"It's super cool that I grew up watching the Oil Kings, that I got the chance to come play here this year and now I also get to be the captain," said Melnyk.
Though he isn't too far from his home here in the Fort, Melnyk is sure to credit his time with the Rangers for where he is today.
"I played my whole minor hockey career in Fort Saskatchewan," said Melnyk. "It built me into the player and person I am today."
He will have some big shoes to fill. Melnyk replaces Jake Neighbours as captain, who helped the Oil Kings to a league championship and Memorial Cup berth just a year ago.
"Definitely some inspiration there," said Melnyk. "I'll try my best, keep doing my thing, and be the leader I am."
Melnyk spent the first three seasons of his WHL career with the Tri-City Americans before being traded to Edmonton last summer.
In 46 games this season, Melnyk has scored 11 goals and 23 points.
