While the heaviest snowfall may be behind Airdrie and the surrounding areas, the snowfall warning issued for Environment and Climate Change Canada is still in effect.
"Snow will continue today, with total amounts of 15 to 30 cm. Snow will taper off from north to south today," Environment and Climate Change Canada stated.
Road conditions on Monday morning on the QEII headed to Calgary are reported to be fair, however, both North and Southbound lanes are partly covered in snow, with blowing snow and shoulder ice and snow buildup. There may also be reduced visibility due to blowing snow
North of Airdrie, there are also reports of blowing snow and partly covered highways, while Highway 72 towards Beiseker has poor visibility, with large sections of highway covered in snow, as well as icy sections and drifting snow.
"Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow."
Motorists are encouraged to drive to winter conditions and keep their low beams on, rather than switching to high beams as low beams are much more effective in fog or heavy snow conditions.
While the snow may be tapering off later today, there will also be a drop in temperatures. Forecasts are predicting that the temperature will fall to -20 on Monday afternoon, and by the evening, factoring in the windchill it may be -30. Thursday night looks to be the coldest night of the week, with temperatures dropping to -37.
