After a three-year hiatus, Winterfest returned to Fort Saskatchewan.
On Family Day (Feb. 20), the Fort Heritage Precinct grounds were filled with people taking part in various winter-themed activities.
Leslie Alkenbrack, vice president of the Fort Saskatchewan Historical Society, says that some of the activities included snow golf, s'mores, and a place to build snowmen.
"The kids were really creative. They created them on the ground and dressed them up with donations from one of our charity shops."
A fan-favorite attraction of Winterfest is the vintage snowmobile show, which has been a staple of the festival since its inception.
Stuart McGowan, president of the society, says that there were some new additions to the show, including a snow plane.
"[The snow plane] won the contest for the oldest machine, as well," McGowan said.
The climax of the snowmobile show is the tour, where the snowmobile owners ride around the heritage precinct to show off their machines in action.
"The nice thing is they're all passionate, and what they really love about it is that it's a free event put on by the historical society."
Due to a lack of volunteers, other attractions, such as dog sledding, were not included this year. However, with the success of Winterfest this year, the historical society is hoping to drum up some support for next year.
