Fort Saskatchewan may be getting an extra lane on Veterans Way (Highway 21) with a price tag of just under $5 million.

City council had the first reading of Bylaw C2-23, which would begin the first phase of widening the corridor on Veterans Way between Highway 15 and 101 Street.

"We've done traffic modelling and design studies over the years that show upgrades are required to the highway when we hit different stages of growth, and we're coming up to those trigger points," said Grant Schaffer with the City of Fort Saskatchewan.

If the bylaw is passed, the project would be broken down into phases over several years with a total cost of $4.9 million, which the city would have to borrow.

The city also announced that opponents of the project have the option to organize a petition signed by at least 1,050 people, which must be submitted to the city manager before March 17.

Mayor Gale Katchur and councillor Jibs Abitoye voted against the bylaw, with the mayor saying she would delay the project until they could find a provincial grant.
