Some more details have come out about the proposed expansion to Veterans Way.
Grant Schaffer, the director of fleet, facilities, and engineering with the city, says that the work will be done through one of Fort Saskatchewan's busiest intersections.
"The section we're doing is between the intersection of Highway 15 and 21 all the way down to 101 Street."
Most of the work will include widening the west side of the highway.
"On the east side, there's a long section that's already three lanes wide, so there will be some widening to create acceleration and deceleration lanes, but most of the work will be on the west side."
Outside of that, there are also plans to widen the right turn lanes off of 101 Street towards Veterans Way as well as lanes going off of Veterans Way towards Highway 15.
"Part of the construction is also for a pedestrian underpass just south of the [Highway 15 and Highway 21] intersection," said Schaffer. "The highway itself is a high load corridor, so to go over it we'd have to be nine metres clear of the road surface, so going under was the most cost-effective solution."
Schaffer said that this could cause delays for an entire season.
"It's going to be inconvenient for people, there's no doubt about that, but in the end, we think the benefit will outweigh that time period."
This is just the first of many phases that the city is planning to execute over the next few years.
There's no word on when construction will start, but city council will be reviewing the project in the coming weeks.
