The 2023 Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) high school basketball provincials started earlier this week.
Five local teams are competing in various tournaments around Alberta, trying to prove their standing among the best the province has to offer.
Here is a look at how each local team has fared so far:
Boys:
3A:
On the boy's side, Morinville and Strathcona Christian have been playing in the 3A tournament in Wetaskiwin.
Morinville bowed out in the first round in a 102-61 loss against Red Deer's St. Joseph team. That loss ended their run.
Strathcona Christian enjoyed a first-round bye but couldn't advance out of the second round, losing a tight game to Holy Trinity by a score of 91-87. They will now play in the B bracket to determine fifth place. Their next game is against Brooks tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Girls:
3A:
There are two local senior girls' teams playing in provincials.
Both Strathcona Christian and Sturgeon received first-round byes in the 3A tournament.
For Strathcona Christian, they defeated Winston Churchill 78-66 to advance to the semi-finals.
Sturgeon was also victorious in their second-round matchup against H. J. Cody High School by a score of 61-57.
The win means there will be a local showdown in the semi-finals between Strathcona Christian and Sturgeon. That game is set for this afternoon.
4A:
The Salisbury senior girls have been playing in the 4A tournament in Edmonton as well.
They won their opening match against Foothills 55-38. Unfortunately, they ran into the top-seeded Raymond team in the second round, bowing out of the main bracket with a 94-54 loss.
They will now play in the fifth-place bracket with their next game going tonight against Magrath.
