Students from Kim's Taekwondo brought home 20 medals from provincials.
The tournaments took place in Swift Current and Regina. Kellan and Ella Mickleborough both brought home gold from provincials.
Students that competed include Jasmyn Hrynyk, Nick Arseneault, Caitlin Delaurier, Jesse Smyth, Finnegan Chow, Kellan Mickleborough, Oliver Smyth, Cullain Smyth, Keira Anderson, Ella Mickleborough, Mattea Jeanson, and Bri Jeanson. Those that competed ranged from age 6 to those in their mid-forties.
Jenna Beaton, one of the instructors at the Dojang, loves seeing students and parents form relationships with each other.
"While the competitors were fighting and sparring, students and parents were cheering no matter what," Beaton remarked. "The school is just like a big family."
Beaton mentioned that training can be quite vigorous in the weeks leading up to provincials. Students take extra classes and go through strenuous drills to strengthen their physical and mental capabilities.
"It's mostly a mental game once you're in [the ring]." Beaton mentioned. "[The drills] help to overcome those internal barriers to their success."
Beaton loves watching her students succeed, but she also loves seeing the persistence and growth that they experience both on and off the mat.
"I tell all of my fighters, 'no matter what, we will win, we will learn, but we will never lose.'" Beaton commented. "It's fun to watch them learn, grow, and succeed."
