The Strathcona Christian senior girls' basketball team took home a provincial silver medal over the weekend.

The team was in Wetaskiwin playing in the 3A provincial tournament.

They opened up their tournament with a first-round bye before defeating Winston Churchill 78-66 to advance to the semis.

It was then a battle of two local teams, as Strathcona Christian defeated Sturgeon by a score of 79-74.

"We had two real tough games to go to the final," said head coach Chris Aubrey. "They were real close games, we had to play well and we did."

Their championship game was against a top-seeded Strathmore team. The girls gave a valiant effort but wound up falling 75-45 and settling for a silver medal.

"It was a tough game for us," sad Aubrey. "We weren't quite shooting as well as we usually did, in the semi-finals we made 10 threes and in the final I think we only made three."

"Didn't have our best game, but we played so well in the tournament and last few months, so it was cool to see how well the girls played."

Despite not getting the gold, Aubrey and the rest of the coaching staff is proud of far they made it.

"I couldn't be more proud, this is the best our girls have ever done," said Aubrey. "They came a long way and worked so hard."

"As a school, we couldn't be more proud of the girls."

The team was rather young to have made it as far as they did. They only had two grade 12 players on the roster, Luci Marshman and Sydney Bylsma, who will now move on from the high school team.

As for the other local team in the tournament, Sturgeon, they came fourth place after dropping the bronze medal game 63-52 against St. Peter the Apostle.
