The Servus Credit Union Spring Food Drive will get underway at the beginning of next month.

The drive will go toward supporting the Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank and is presented by Servus Credit Union, PME Inc., the Bridge Church, and MIX 107.

Kassandra Gartner, the executive director of the food bank, is extremely excited to have the community's help.

"[This event] is a first for us, we are really excited about this," said Gartner. "Everybody has pulled together to make it happen and make it really convenient to donate."

On April 1 and 2, PME trucks and volunteers will be gathering at local grocery stores to collect both food and cash donations for the food bank.

The first few months of the year are extremely difficult for the food bank, Gartner says.

"We're looking forward to a terrific weekend and seeing our community support us. We know that our community likes to take care of everyone."

The food bank is hoping to get some more volunteers on board for the weekend.

"We need the community to come out," said Gartner. "We have short shifts scheduled for every store."

"It's an opportunity for parents to volunteer with their youth, for sports teams and community groups."

Stores that will be participating in the event will include Safeway, Co-op, Freson Bros, No Frills, and Walmart.

Each grocery store is expected to have the food bank's most needed items in stock, which include:

  • Canned fruit

  • Kraft Dinner

  • Beans in sauce

  • Ready-to-eat soup & chili

  • Sidekicks - noodles or rice

  • Canned Meat - turkey, ham or chicken

  • Pasta sauce

  • Rice

  • Mr. Noodles or ramen soup

  • Cookies

  • Juice

  • Healthy cereal

  • Toiletries / personal care items

An initial kick-off to the event will be held on April 1 at Freson Bros. with representatives from Servus.
