Careers Under Construction has introduced a free 12-week workplace training program for residents of Fort Saskatchewan and the surrounding area.
Teaming up with Omnia training, this program - called Skill-Bit - is designed to get oilfield and construction labourers ready for the job site through on-site training.
"The program combines essential skills and technical job site training to prepare prospective workers for diverse job sites in Alberta," said Careers Under Construction president Jill Dean.
Skill-Bit offers three specializations: directional drilling, concrete, and arborist labour.
Prospective students get to select their specialization during assessment with their intake counsellor based on their skills, experiences, and career goals.
"What we're seeing is people coming to us exhibiting signs of anxiety, and we've kind of all gone into ourselves through COVID," said Dean.
"Our goal is to work with these people, help them get over that hump, and get them back into employment, school, and to keep it long-term."
This program doesn't just offer physical training, but mental health training as well. After finding employment through the program, students will have access to support and services for up to 180 days.
These supports include job retention coaching, mental health counselling, and even access to the latest labour market information.
Those looking to join the program must meet the following criteria:
- Be over 18 years of age
- Be a resident of the Edmonton Metropolitan Region
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
- Able to make it to the Skill-Bit location in Fort Saskatchewan
- Are either unemployed or under-employed
- Willing to commit to 12 weeks of full-time training
