Thomas “Russell” Thomas
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear son, brother, and cherished friend Russell Thomas on March 7, 2023, at the Portage District General Hospital with family and friends by his side.
Russell was born on Jan 26, 1965 in St. Laurent, Quebec to parents William and Bernadette Thomas. He was the beloved youngest brother to Roland, and twin sisters Dawn and Dale. He was born a healthy baby at approximately 9 lbs. Shortly following his birth, he suffered respiratory distress which resulted in neonatal anoxic brain damage. This would be the first of many struggles Russell would face in his life, but he handled them with resilience and perseverance, which determined who he became in life.
Russell came to live at Manitoba Developmental Centre when he was 8 years old. He was an active young man who enjoyed many activities including music, art, going to school and he loved animals. As he got older, he continued his love of music and enjoyed playing the drums and was a regular in the choirs.
Russell was supported and loved by his family. Although he lost his father at a young age, and his big brother Roland later on in his life, family was very important to Russell. He always looked forward to his visits from his Mom, sisters and his brother-in-law Mike. He was a happy, caring gentleman who always had a smile for everyone, especially the girls. He will be greatly missed by all the MDC staff that had the privilege to care for him over the years, especially his beloved family on Groveby, and more particularly, his special lady, NIcki.
A funeral service will be held for Russell at Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Rd. S., Portage la Prairie, MB on Wednesday, March 29th, 2023 at 1:30 p.m.
