More details have come out surrounding the road closure near Ardrossan on Monday (Mar. 27) afternoon.

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle near 119 Avenue and 35 Street. Upon arrival, police say they noticed a blue Dodge minivan leaving the area with a mismatched license plate.

Officers report that they began covertly following the vehicle as it headed towards the Yellowhead overpass. While stopped at a red light, the minivan reportedly made a sudden U-turn, which ended up striking an unmarked police vehicle.

The minivan allegedly fled down Yellowhead Trail, reaching speeds well over 100 km/h. Police say they pursued the vehicle with the help of helicopters and police dogs.

Eventually, the damaged minivan came to a stop on its own in the area of Highway 16 and Range Road 222.

According to police, a citizen used their vehicle to block the minivan and prevent it from fleeing as officers arrived and placed the male driver into custody.

The driver of the minivan was not injured, while the driver of the unmarked police vehicle faced minor injuries.

The 33-year-old driver is now facing numerous charges, including possession of stolen property, criminal hit and run, and dangerous driving.
