A local nail artist has been selected as a contestant in the world's largest nail competition.

Owner of Allure Nail Salon & Boutique, Kaitlin Fehr, was selected as a competitor for the next ‘Nail Icon’ after submitting an online registration.

“It's exciting,” she stated. “It gives me a chance to go outside the box if I want. I didn't have time to do a huge, bougie set this time, so it's just my basic portfolio of the nails that I do on my everyday clients. But it's still fun to be able to compete, have your name out there, and give a little bit more recognition to the nail artists in our little province.”

The competition is broken down into a series of different rounds with the final round scheduled to take place in the summer.

“They actually have an extensive process,” Fehr elaborated. “It runs from March 27 until June first, and they have different rounds. They weed out people throughout the rounds, so it goes from top 20 to top 15, top ten, and so on, before it gets to the quarterfinals and the finals at the beginning of June.”

Individuals can vote for their favourite nail artist for free once a day. Verification is required through Facebook or a payment method.

Votes can also be purchased for one dollar a vote.

All proceeds from the voting process go directly towards Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, which supports the mental health of young people and aims to build a kinder and braver world.

The winning artist will receive $5,000 and a feature in Life & Style magazine.

“It would give me a chance to bring light onto all of the estheticians who are kind of behind the scenes that don't get a lot of recognition because we're in smaller communities,” she elaborated. “I wouldn't say no to $5,000, that would mean more gel polish in my cupboard for my clients.”
