To help grow the sport and athletes grow their skills, a new football camp is coming to Airdrie this summer.
George McDougall Mustangs Head Coach, Chris Glass, is one of many coaches that will be helping put on the Airdrie Football Academy camp this summer for high school football players in Grades 7-12.
Glass talked about how this whole idea started.
"A gentleman named Keith Foord (George McDougall's defensive backs coach) was running a DB skills camp for free and had approached me saying, 'We have a bunch of receivers showing up and it's just me running this thing, do you want to come and help out?' So, I joined him for one practice. I think we had 30-35 kids coming out to this unorganized camp."
As that camp continued to grow, it was time to start up a more organized event, explained Glass. This camp will really hone in on individual skills for the three positions they are offering this year, quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back.
"Anytime you can have skill development, you're going to be growing all the programs here in Airdrie. The biggest thing for me is offering a program that offers high-calibre coaching but doesn't have a high cost around it. We would be doing this for free like we did last year if it was sustainable."
Glass mentioned all the coaches that are a part of this camp are all in it to grow the sport in Airdrie and the surrounding area. There will be seven coaches and 65 spots for kids to fill up.
"We're hoping to sell it out, and it's actually going really well. In fact, our quarterback portion is already 50 per cent full. Whoever shows up, we're gonna work hard and teach them the game to the best of our ability."
The camp will start July 4 and will run all the way to August 10.
