Property owners in Swift Current should be checking the mailbox this week for their 2023 Property Assessment notices.

The notices, which were mailed out last week by the City of Swift Current Assessment Department, allow property owners to evaluate their information, and see what their property is valued at, explained Julianne Rempel, Manager of Assessment Services for the City.

“The assessment notice is your annual reminder of what your property is valued at,” she stated. “The purpose of the assessment is to provide a value to a property, and then use it as a base for calculating taxation.”

Property owners are encouraged to review their assessment upon receiving it to ensure all information is correct.

“The number one best thing to do is when you receive it, open it up, make sure that your name, your address, and your mailing address are correct,” Rempel elaborated. “Then you can see what your property type is, whether you're residential or commercial, and you can look at the assessed value on it.

“It also has a box for your school support. Individuals can choose whether they want to declare support for the public school system or the separate school system, it gives you an opportunity to review that.

Assessments in Saskatchewan run on a four-year cycle.

There is a 30-day appeal window that runs until May 1 for the review of property assessments and/or appeals.

“It allows you to see where we're valuing your property,” she continued. “It allows you the opportunity to ask questions and to figure out what the process is and to make sure that we have your information right.

“It also opens the channels of communication, you can ask us any questions you have about your property or how things work in Saskatchewan or specifically here in Swift Current, in your community.”

The City of Swift Current Assessment Department can be reached by email at assessment@swiftcurrent.ca or by phone at (306) 778 2743.
