As the weather is getting warmer and the snow is melting off the ground, it's becoming that time of year again where farmers are gearing up for one of their busiest times of the year: seeding.
Farm hand for Magnum Opus inc. Ty Nielson says they are looking at the weather forecast a lot as some fields are going to still be muddy and wet.
“That could slow us down in areas and we might not get into all the nooks and crannies that we normally do.”
Seeding could start as early as the following week or the end of next week but that is only if the weather forecast stays true and stays warm.
“It might help dry it (the fields) out to the point that when the ground temperature rises to a point where we can start seeding, it might be okay."
Nielson explained they can't do much if it gets too slick or if there is rain in the forecast and they shut down.
“Getting rain for the crops is welcomed but it tends to push seeding back, so it’s a double-edged sword.”
As for the snow, it’s clearing pretty fast in the fields and Nielson doesn’t think that it will slow them down too much aside from just the wet fields.
“Some of our land is out towards Brooks and that land out there is a lot drier, and we have been honestly thinking about getting out there the beginning of next week. We just need to wait for the sun to warm up the ground a bit more first.”
As for now, Nielson and the Magnum Opus crew are spreading manure and fertilizing the fields that need it so that their crops will come out better.
“If you are travelling the highways north out of town you will probably see those truck and if you are lucky enough you might spot us in the field spreading.”
